StepForward4PKU - NEWRY WALK

Slieve Gullion Forest Park
Sunday, 30 June 2019 - 11:00am

On Sunday 30th June 2019 at 11am to mark International PKU Day 2019 (28.6.19) friends and families will be walking together to raise awareness and funds for NSPKU.

The Newry Walk...

Location: Slieve Gullion Forest Park – Giant’s Lair and Adventure Park, 89 Drumintee Rd, Meigh, Newry BT35 8SW

Start: 10.45am meet for an 11am start

Slieve Gullion Forest Park offers the unmissable opportunity to experience tranquil woodland trails, stunning views across the Ring of Gullion, Mourne Mountains, Cooley Peninsula and Armagh Drumlins and top class facilities for walkers and families. Play in the Adventure Playpark; explore the Giant’s Lair in the wonderful Hawthorn Hill Forest Nature Reserve and woodland trails, or take a turn in the ornamental walled garden, where you will find picnic benches, an outdoor performance stage, an al fresco coffee bar (open in the summer) and a wildlife pond with covered seating areas.

Directions: The mischievous trolls get into your SatNav around this magical mountain- so we advise not using it to get here! Good old pen and paper, they can’t muddle that up.

From either Belfast or Dublin directions; Exit through the Forkhill Exit, B113. This sign also directs visitors to Newry, W’point and the Mourne Coastal Route. From the slip road you will pick up the first sign for Slieve Gullion Forest Park (4th exit from north, 1st exit from south). On the exit road you will pick up signs for Forkhill B113 and Slieve Gullion Forest Park.

After 1.5km you will pass a petrol station on the right and another on your left. A further 2.5km will take you into the village of Meigh, after exiting Meigh watch out for the Slieve Gullion Forest Park signs – from Meigh it is only 1.5km. Continue on until you see the entrance for Slieve Gullion Forest Park, avoid the temptation of going down the Wood Road or the Baillintemple Road and always... look out for trolls, fairies and giants!

If you are coming from Jonesborough, turn right when you reach the Three Steps Bar and Lounge on the corner of the B113, follow the signs for Newry. From here its 2.5km to the Forest Park gates, watch out for the approach signs.

Parking: The car park can accommodate 120 cars (8 disabled parking bays), and has space for four 50 seater buses; there is also an additional 80 spaces in an overspill car park.

Food: Please bring your own packed lunch.

Facilities: In the Slieve Gullion Courtyard buildings there is the newly opened Synge & Byrne Café (8am to 6pm 7 days a week), Synge & Byrne Coffee dock, Clanrye Tuck Shop a Visitor Information Office and toilets. The café, and toilets have disabled access from the carpark – follow the signs.

Weather: The walk will continue in wet weather, good grip footwear suggested, suitable clothing, layers and sunscreen.

Dogs: Are not allowed in the Adventure Playpark, and must be ‘under control’ at all times in the rest of the Forest Park.

Photographs: May appear in News & Views or internet (I would like to tweet them - from Suzanne!) unless are objections notified.

Donations: To NSPKU are welcome – suggest £5 for adults £1 for children.
